What does ULEZ mean?

ULEZ stands for Ultra Low Emission Zone. The zones are there to help improve the air quality in central parts of London. These areas have been hit by high levels of pollution over the years as a result of increased numbers of vehicles on the roads. The revenue acquired for charges and fines will be reinvested into improving London’s public transport networks.

How much does it cost and how do I pay?

To drive within these zones in a non-compliant car, you will now be required to pay a daily charge of £12.50 on top of the London Congestion Charge. For larger vehicles such as coaches and lorries, this price is much higher, at £100 a day. You can pay via the TFL website or via the TFL app. Auto Pay can be set up if you are someone who drives into London frequently. If you are a regular commuter with a non-compliant car, then your bills could be as high as £5,500 a year.

Where and when does ULEZ apply?

ULEZ takes place every day of the year, except Christmas. With the new expansion, the zones now cover the following areas:

  • Barnet
  • Brent
  • Camden
  • City of Westminster
  • Ealing
  • Hammersmith and Fulham
  • Kensington and Chelsea
  • Greenwich, Newham and Tower Hamlets
  • Hackney
  • Redbridge
  • Waltham Forest
  • Enfield
  • Haringey
  • Islington
  • Hounslow
  • Richmond
  • Wandsworth
  • Lambeth
